MAN UTD PREPARE £30M DEFENDER BID AS LIVERPOOL 'RETAIN INTEREST' IN ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL

All of the latest Premier League transfer news, including Liverpool, Man Utd, and Crystal Palace

We begin Monday’s Premier League transfer rumour roundup with an update from Fabrizio Romano on Liverpool’s interest in Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. The Reds have been linked with the England international in recent days amid suggestions that the Magpies may have to sell a prized asset or two this summer in a bid to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

As a consequence, Elliot Anderson has been offloaded to Nottingham Forest, and while Romano has stated that Liverpool are still interested in Gordon, the likelihood is that Newcastle are now in a much more advantageous position when it comes to keeping the attacker at St. James’ Park for the time being.

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, the Italian reporter said: “Anthony Gordon was one more player discussed in terms of outgoings when Newcastle had to face the possibility of losing one of the stars they had on the team because of FFP. They had a discussion with Liverpool, exploring the possibility of a swap deal. Liverpool retain an interest in Anthony Gordon. Liverpool believe he is a very talented player. The player was also open to the situation just waiting for Newcastle to make the best decision. So not to leave Newcastle but open to any situation. The reality is they were never close; the only way to make it happen was for Newcastle to drop the price. It never happened. So Gordon and Isak were never really close to leaving the club.”

The 3AM Verdict: This is really positive news for Newcastle. Losing Gordon would have been a hammer blow, and it would now appear that he is all but nailed on to remain a Magpie this summer. Liverpool could still make their move further down the line, but for now the Toon should be out of the woods.

Man Utd prepare De Ligt bid

Elsewhere, Manchester United are understood to be preparing a bid for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, but could fall significantly short of the German club’s asking price for the Dutchman. The 24-year-old has struggled for regular game time in Bavaria, and could be sold this summer, but according to Christian Falk of Bild, there is a considerable discrepancy between United and Bayern’s respective valuations of the player.

He said: “FC Bayern have to sell players in order to be able to continue purchasing. Erik ten Hag, who is currently negotiating a contract extension with Man Utd, would like to bring in Matthijs de Ligt. Accordingly, ten Hag should be prepared to pay a high transfer fee for De Ligt. Bayern want up to €70m [£59.4m], but Manchester United should only want to pay half.”

The 3AM Verdict: If Falk is right, then surely this deal is a no go. Bayern paid £65.4 million for De Ligt just two years ago, and now United are trying to nab him for less than half of that fee. Unless there is a significant compromise made, then you would presume that this transfer will not happen.

Palace eye Sessegnon

And finally, Crystal Palace are said to be considering a bid to sign free agent Ryan Sessegnon following his release from Tottenham - although the wide man’s fitness issues could prove to be a stumbling block for the Eagles.

According to The Sun, Palace are mulling over a bid for the 24-year-old, but may think twice about completing a deal until they have done the necessary research into his injury background. The left-sided talent spent considerable swathes of last season on the treatment table, but will be eager to kickstart his career with a new club in the coming weeks.

The 3AM Verdict: On paper, this could be a shrewd signing. Sessegnon is a player with huge potential, available on a free transfer. That being said, he has struggled with injuries, and Palace wouldn’t be doing their job properly if they weren’t sure that they weren’t bringing in a player actually capable of staying fit and available. An intriguing one, for sure.
