RUUD VAN NISTELROOY UNHAPPY WITH 'FAKE' CODY GAKPO QUOTES ABOUT MANCHESTER UNITED

PSV Eindhoven manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has hit out at the fake quotes that emerged over Cody Gakpo's move to Liverpool.

The Holland international completed his move to Merseyside in January as the Reds gazumped the Dutch icon's former club, Manchester United, to the attacker. The winter move saw the Eredivisie giants lose their skipper as well as Noni Madueke who also made the move to the Premier League as he joined Chelsea.

Since arriving in England, the 23-year-old has scored four goals in nine Premier League appearances including his impressive brace in the 7-0 rout of the Red Devils at Anfield at the beginning of March.

Speaking on The Overlap with Gary Neville, the PSV boss took a swipe at the quotes which had emerged after Gakpo chose Anfield over Old Trafford.

"I did nothing," he responded after the Mancunian full-back made a tongue-in-cheek remark about letting his captain join his former arch-rivals.

Van Nistelrooy added: "I saw one of the worst quotes about me on that [Gakpo signing for Liverpool]. Gakpo got asked about it Liverpool [and] Manchester United but it was a completely made-up, fake quote. But anyway."

The 46-year-old has taken umbrage with quotes which had appeared on Telegraph's Twitter account at the beginning of February.

"Gakpo’s dream move was Manchester United," was what Van Nistelrooy had apparently been quoted to say. "I advised him to wait ’til the summer. Something happened and he refused my advice and listened to Virgil van Dijk, who tempted him to join his team."

Fans of United on Twitter took great delight in the belief that their rivals had signed a die-hard fan, however these were eventually debunked and found to be false with the Old Trafford icon now clarifying they were completely fictional.
