F1 SAFETY CAR CRASHES AT HIGH-SPEED AT ITALIAN GP IN BIZARRE SCENES

Formula One’s safety car was involved in a scary and bizarre crash in the build-up to the Italian Grand Prix this weekend.

On Thursday, the F1 circus rolled into the historic and world famous Monza circuit, with the safety and medical cars taking part in their usual high-speed safety car test.

But the test was ended early after the Aston Martin Vantage safety car spun off at the high-speed parabolica corner and buried itself into the barriers.

Marshals and medics were quickly on the scene, but thankfully driver Bernd Maylander and his passenger were able to climb out of the wreckage unaided and appeared unhurt.

It is not known whether it was driver error or a mechanical issue that caused the crash.

An FIA spokesperson said: ‘There was an on-track incident with the FIA Safety Car today at Monza. Aston Martin is investigating the cause but can confirm both driver and passenger are fine.

‘There is an additional Safety Car at the circuit and it will not impact the weekend’s event.’

The parabolica is one of the most famous and toughest corners in motorsport, with F1 cars approaching the turn at around 208mph before taking the apex at around 142mph.

The Italian Grand Prix is round 16 of 24 of the 2024 season, with Max Verstappen going into the race with a 70 point lead over Lando Norris.

But thanks to McLaren’s soaring pace, there is a chance Norris could still snatch the title away from the three-time champion, with the Brit recording a dominant win at the Dutch Grand Prix last weekend.
