WIMBLEDON 2024 LIVE: TENNIS SCORES AS EMMA RADUCANU CRASHES OUT AFTER DEFEAT TO QUALIFIER LULU SUN

LIVE – Updated at 23:40

Emma Raducanu is out of Wimbledon after defeat to the qualifier Lulu Sun on Centre Court. Raducanu was bidding to reach the quarter-finals for the first time but was outpowered by her opponent, the world number 123, who won 6-2 5-7 6-2.

The 21-year-old was hampered by physical issues and called for a medical timeout following a slip on the grass just moments after forcing a third set. Sun broke immediately and amid a barrage of winners, went on to claim the biggest win of her life to reach the last eight.

Raducanu was the last British player in the singles. She had pulled out of the mixed doubles with Andy Murray on Saturday, therefore bringing the two-time champion’s Wimbledon career to a sudden end.

There was another shock later on Centre Court as Coco Gauff was once again was unable to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals and was beaten in straight sets, 6-4 6-3, by fellow American Emma Navarro

In the men’s singles draw, No 1 seed Jannik Sinner impressively downed Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 to march into the quarter-finals and he’s still on course for a semi-final showdown against reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz, who was made to work hard in a 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 triumph over Ugo Humbert.

Wimbledon order of play and Monday’s schedule

Wimbledon 2024: Lulu Sun reacts to stunning win over Emma Raducanu

22:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Lulu Sun reveals her tactics against Emma Raducanu after knocking out the former US Open champion.

“I think if you give Emma the time, she’s going to take advantage of it, she’s going to take the opportunity, which she did.

“I think staying aggressive was definitely a key point to the match.

“It worked well because getting her to move and getting her on the defence was what I wanted because as soon as she gets aggressive on her side, then the chance gets smaller for me.”

On facing the Centre Court crowd: “I kind of expected it. She’s obviously from here. She’s one of the favourites.

“Honestly, the British crowd is not that bad. If you’ve seen, like, French crowds at the French Open or at the US Open. I was expecting the support for her, but they were honestly okay for me.”

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu explains wrist injury

22:30 , Jamie Braidwood

“I just woke up yesterday with a bit of stiff wrist. With the balls being quite heavy in the grass, it’s just something that I have to manage. I’ve been playing on the grass for quite a few weeks now. I think I just had to prioritise my singles.

“I’ve been managing a stiff back since yesterday. I think it was just exaggerated today, I’d say. I was feeling it during the match. I think especially on serve it was affecting me a bit.”

Raducanu, who matched her best performance at a grand slam since winning the US Open by reaching the fourth round, also said she had not discussed with Murray what they would do about their mixed-doubles tournament if she reached the second week of Wimbledon.

“I think going into the tournament, I wasn’t expecting to make fourth round. So for me it was a no-brainer. I would have loved to have played.

“He didn’t ask me, ‘If you’re still in the singles, are you going to play?’ That was never a question to be answered. Given how I woke up yesterday morning, it was for me a no-brainer.”

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu on pulling out of doubles

22:10 , Jamie Braidwood

“I think it was the right decision. I stand by the decision. Obviously it was a tough decision, though, because it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do.

“I didn’t want to take his last match away from him. But at the end of the day I think a lot of the players in a similar situation would have done the same thing, prioritising their body. I still stand by making the right call.

“He was obviously disappointed because it’s his last match [at Wimbledon]. But what a champion. I think that hopefully he’ll play in the Olympics and have another farewell there.

“I think with every decision, people are entitled to their opinions. Of course, there was a bit of a cloud it.

“I don’t think I would have done it any other way. I think in this sport especially, as an individual, you have to make your own calls and prioritise yourself. Especially with my history, I just had to put myself first.”

Emma Raducanu breaks silence on decision that ended Andy Murray’s Wimbledon career after singles exit

21:49 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu said she stands by her decision to withdraw from her Wimbledon mixed-doubles match with Andy Murray after exiting the singles tournament following a three-set defeat to qualifier Lulu Sun.

Raducanu woke up with a stiff wrist on Saturday and informed Murray that she would be prioritising her involvement in the singles, even though it denied the two-time champion a final match at the All England Club.

The 21-year-old was then knocked out in the singles in the fourth round by world number 123 Sun on Centre Court on Sunday, losing in three sets to the qualifier as she struggled with her lower back.

Despite receiving some criticism for pulling out of her match with Murray, Raducanu said she did not regret accepting the 37-year-old’s offer to play in the mixed doubles, but the former US Open admitted she did not expect to reach the fourth round.

Coco Gauff crashes out with shock defeat to continue Wimbledon woe

21:45 , Luke Baker

Coco Gauff failed to smash through her grass ceiling as she once again was unable to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

The second seed was beaten in straight sets, 6-4 6-3, by fellow American Emma Navarro on Centre Court.

Wimbledon remains the only grand slam at which Gauff, the reigning champion on the hard courts at the US Open and a runner-up on the Roland Garros clay, has not reached the last eight.

RESULT! Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-3 Coco Gauff

21:24 , Luke Baker

The pair trade the opening two points of the game before Gauff goes long and Navarro moves 30-15. But Gauff hits back as she moves to the net and makes it 30-30.

Gauff’s return goes long and Navarro has match point! And it’s saved! Navarro goes long with a simple forehand. Perhaps that was nerves.

She brings up a second match point straight away but skews a forehand wide. Two chances have come and gone... Gauff nets again, third time lucky with match point?

YES! IT’S THERE! EMMA NAVARRO HAS STUNNED COCO GAUFF 6-4, 6-3 TO MOVE INTO THE WIMBLEDON QUARTER-FINALS!

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Navarro 6-4, 5-3 Coco Gauff

21:19 , Luke Baker

The moment of truth is her for Emma Navarro. Coco Gauff has held serve, so the the 19th seed has a chance to serve out a remarkable victory over the favourite to win the women’s title.

Wimbledon 2024: Result

We can bring you a result from that final men’s last-16 match of the day and Tommy Paul has wrapped it up in straight sets against Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 7-6, 6-2 and the American will next play Carlos Alcaraz.

They had to wait around all day but Paul got the job done when they finally played.

Well, well well... This shock has just come a whole lot closer... Emma Navarro has broken Coco Gauff in the second set and is just two games away from victory at 4-1.

This would be seismic and throw the women’s draw even wider open.

Have we got a shock brewing on Centre Court...?

The Coco Gauff v Emma Navarro match looks destined for a first-set tiebreak but, serving to stay in the set at 5-4 behind, Gauff finds herself broken and 19th seed Navarro nicks the first set off her fellow American.

The No 2 seed seemed to be well on course, moving through the rounds, but could she be about to suffer a surprise defeat?

Emma Raducanu out of Wimbledon after painful defeat to qualifier Lulu Sun

20:53 , Luke Baker

At least Emma Raducanu knew the feeling, of being the unknown, overlooked quantity and stepping onto the big stage to attack with merciless intent. But at Wimbledon, the strategy that won Raducanu the US Open as an 18-year-old qualifier has now been used against her.

As New Zealand player Lulu Sun thundered another crushing forehand winner past Raducanu on Centre Court, the world No 123 advanced to the quarter-finals having started the tournament in the first round of qualifying two weeks ago.

A 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 scoreline illustrates one story from this match, a one-sided first set, a battle in the second, a challenging third after Raducanu slipped on the grass and called a medical timeout that rather stalled her comeback.

But a winner count of 52 to Sun to Raducanu’s 19 tells another tale. The Sun, really, was on fire, as the last British player in the singles draw was wiped off Centre Court by a barrage of forehand strikes from the 23-year-old only making her second appearance at a grand slam.

Tommy Paul is just a set away from a quarter-final against Carlos Alcaraz, as he follows up his 6-2 triumph in the first set over Roberto Bautista Agut by taking the second-set tiebreak 7-3.

The American 12th seed will want to try and get this match wrapped up this evening before bad light stops play if possible.

Lulu Sun emotional after beating Emma Raducanu

Just a couple of singles matches left to tidy up today. On Centre Court, following Emma Raducanu’s defeat, Coco Gauff has stepped on to the grass. She’s facing fellow American Emma Navarro and it’s on serve in the (very) early going there.

On Court 2, Tommy Paul and Roberto Bautista Agut are trying to become the fourth man through to the quarter-finals. 12th seed Paul won the first set 6-2 and the second set has just gone 6-6, so we’re headed to a tiebreak to decide it. The winner of the match will play Carlos Alcaraz in the last eight.

Emma Raducanu beaten by qualifier Lulu Sun

Here’s the moment that qualifier Lulu Sun confirmed her stunning victory over Emma Raducanu on Centre Court. Brilliant stuff from the New Zealander

Lulu Sun reacts to beating Emma Raducanu

19:56 , Luke Baker

A nice interview with Lulu Sun courtside after that win. She’s clearly emotional, initially in tears before answering Annabel Croft’s questions.

It was a great match against Emma. She relly dug deep to get the win from me. I had to fight tooth and nail against her. She’s going to run for every ball and fight to the end. I’m just incredibly... I don’t have the words right now.

While walking to the court I was like “wow I’ve never seen this”. I was looking around, taking it in for the first time. I was super happy to play on this court in front of all of you. It was an amazing experience for me.

I played a bit on grass in juniors and a couple of pro tournaments. I also watched the professionals growing up. Federer of course, coming towards the net and I watched on YouTube Steffi Graf vs Navratilova. It was so amazing to watch them andtaking it all in from the pros, I tried to add that to my game.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 2-6 Lulu Sun

19:48 , Luke Baker

And it’s there! LULU SUN HAS STUNNED EMMA RADUCANU IN THE LAST 16 OF WIMBLEDON. The New Zealand qualifier, playing just her second-ever grand slam, triumphs 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Raducanu fights in the final game and gets it to 30-30. She then stays in a long rally and forces a break point but Sun puts away a floating ball and saves it well. Brilliant forehand winner clips the line and it’s now a match point for the underdog.

But Raducanu digs out an unbelievable cross-court backhand winner to save it! And the Brit brings up a second break point as Sun goes long but again, her opponent controls the rally to save it.

Great point by Sun, included a powerful forehand put away to bring up a second match point and this time makes no mistake! Raducanu goes long and Lulu Sun gives a scream of delight as she reaches the quarter-finals!

Some bad news from Court 1. Grigor Dimitrov and Daniil Medvedev were set to play out a fascinating men’s singles last-16 match but after just eight games, Dimitrov was forced to retire injured, at 5-3 down.

It means fifth seed Medvedev will go on to face Jannik Sinner in the last eight.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 2-5 Lulu Sun* - BREAK!

19:40 , Luke Baker

Raducanu digs out a gorgeous backhand winner down the line but Sun says anything you can do, I can do better, and crunches a clean cross-court forehand winner for 30-30.

Now a backhand winner on the return of serve and it’s a break point for the New Zealander. Needless to say, Raducanu can’t afford to be broken again... And she gets away with it! Sun sets the point up perfectly but then goes long with potentially the winning forehand! Break point saved but Raducanu squanders a couple of game points that come her way.

Now a second break point for Sun and oh dear, oh dear. It’s a double fault. Horrible way to hand Sun the double break and this Wimbledon campaign is all but over for Emma Raducanu.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 2-4 Lulu Sun

19:31 , Luke Baker

A double fault to open up the latest service game for Sun... Suddenly it’s 0-30 as the qualifier goes well long. Chance for Raducanu?

The New Zealander fights back and puts away an overhead smash for 30-30 before a big serve sets her up to hold which she takes when firing a forehand at Raducanu at the net, who can’t find the volley. That was a great response to a potentially dangerous situation. Two more holds needed...

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 2-3 Lulu Sun*

19:27 , Luke Baker

Raducanu loops up a tempting half-court moon ball but Sun can only smash it into the bottom of the net. She’s rightly annoyed with herself there.

A solid hold to 15 for the Brit, finished with a half-court forehand put away. Three chances left for Raducanu to break the Sun serve and save this match.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 1-3 Lulu Sun

19:24 , Luke Baker

Oof! Sun crushes a backhand winner down the line to open up the game but Raducanu dominates the next two longer rallies, eventually forcing the New Zealander to drift long, and the Brit has a sniff at 15-30.

But Sun dictates the next few points, stepping in behind big first serves to repel any danger and Raducanu sends a forehand long to see the chance slip away. Good hold.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 1-2 Lulu Sun*

19:21 , Luke Baker

Here are some shots from the medical treatment Raducanu received. She seems to be moving completely freely now for what it’s worth.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 1-2 Lulu Sun*

19:18 , Luke Baker

Sun is shining now! A gorgeous forehand winner makes it 15-30, her depth of groundstrokes so far today has been immense. To her credit, Raducanu digs deep though and wins the next two points to put her on the brink of a vital hold, which is sealed with an ace down the ‘t’.

A huge hold in the context of this deciding set

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 0-2 Lulu Sun

19:15 , Luke Baker

Raducanu responds well to going a break down and crunches a cross-court forehand winner to make it 30-30. Sun brings up game point with a powerful groundstroke before a stunning clean winner off the forehand side enables her to consolidate the break.

Advantage Sun in this deciding set.

Jannik Sinner lays down powerful marker to leave Carlos Alcaraz quaking

19:12 , Luke Baker

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz remain on course for a scintillating semi-final showdown at Wimbledon but the Italian will be happier with his work on the middle Sunday at SW19 as the pair moved just one step away from renewing a rivalry that could well define the next decade of men’s tennis.

While Alcaraz was toiling away on Centre Court, being pushed by the relentless Ugo Humbert before escaping with a four-set win, Sinner was swatting away a potentially dangerous foe in Ben Shelton on Court 1 with remarkable ruthlessness.

Shelton has arguably been the busiest man at Wimbledon this week, with his first three matches in the men’s singles draw all going to five sets, while he has also been playing doubles alongside Mackenzie McDonald. The 21-year-old American, who burst on to the scene with his run to the semi-finals at last year’s US Open, is a ball of energy around the court and showed no ill effects from his punishing schedule but Sinner largely outclassed him in a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) win that took just over two hours.

That’s a promising sign. An ace off the first point out of the medical timeout to make it 30-30! But Sun hits back with a lovely put-away volley to bring up a break point!

Raducanu moved about the court and eventually nets, so LULU SUN HAS A BREAK OF SERVE in the first game of the decider. Raducanu’s movement didn’t seem too impeded at least.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 0-0 Lulu Sun - MEDICAL TIMEOUT!

19:07 , Luke Baker

This is really not looking good for Raducanu. After receiving the back massage on the floor, she gingerly gets to her feet and sits in her chair, where the physio manipulates her body from side to side to try and loosen it up.

She’s going to give it a go, anyway. We’re back underway with Raducanu 15-30 down in the first game of the third set

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 0-0 Lulu Sun - MEDICAL TIMEOUT

19:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Raducanu is on her back receiving treatment to her left side after that fall.

When Raducanu went down after slipping, her legs split and she’s receiving around the knee area too.

While this is added drama, it is not good news for Raducanu. She is now on her front, also getting treatment on her back.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 0-0 Lulu Sun

18:59 , Jamie Braidwood

After breaking in the 12th game of the second set, Raducanu will serve first to start the third.

Finally, she has some momentum, and the Centre Court crowd are loving this.

Oh no.... Raducanu has slipped on the grass and shakes her head....

Raducanu gets back to her feet and walks slowly back to her chair and sits down.

She slipped behind the baseline attempting to retrieve a forehand from Sun.

The physio has been called.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 Lulu Sun - SET

18:52 , Jamie Braidwood

We’re going to a third set on Centre Court! How Raducanu managed to hang on there, in the face of those attacks from Sun, I will never know. But she did and the qualifier got tight in the closing stages.

Both players head off for a break!

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 7-5 Lulu Sun - SET

18:47 , Jamie Braidwood

Huge roars around Centre Court as Raducanu scrambles to make a lob, smash and stay in the point as Sun fires long!

A half-chance. Sun shuts the door with a forehand winner crosscourt, onto the line.

30-30. Still hope here for Raducanu to force the third before a tiebreak.

Sun has Raducanu running, but then blinks on a smash at the net!

SET POINT! Sun lands the first serve into the net but does not hesitate as she saves with the forehand.

Deuce: RADUCANU FOREHAND WINNER!

Another set point... Sun finds the net... second serve... SUN FIRES LONG!

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 6-5 Lulu Sun*

18:43 , Jamie Braidwood

Raducanu looks to be heading for a confident hold after blasting a forehand down the line but errs on the pick-up volley and suddenly Sun is back at 30-30 after a forehand strike.

Sun, though, chucks a backhand long. Nerves? Maybe! Sun misses on another return. This time into the net.

Raducanu has got a tiebreak at least.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 5-5 Lulu Sun

Sun starts with a forehand winner and does not let up. Another solid hold.

Raducanu didn’t really get a look.

A rare miss from Sun when standing over the rising ball! Raducanu gets to 40-15 and then closes it out with an ace!

Sun will surely start to feel the pressure now, as she must hold to stay in the set.

Ooooh this is tense.

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 4-4 Lulu Sun

Is this the moment? Raducanu edges ahead to 15-30 with a backhand lob that drops inside the baseline.

Sun thinks she’s found the ace but Raducanu challenges and finds it landed out!

But on the second serve, Raducanu fires long on the forehand! A big miss.

Sun nets on the backhand, though, so this set gets another deuce game.

In a flash behind serve, Sun closes it out.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 4-3 Lulu Sun*

18:21 , Jamie Braidwood

Sun steps in impressively to land a forehand winner on the volley and move to 15-30, but Raducanu finds a good serve up the middle.

But on the return, Sun steps in again and puts away a brilliant volley onto the line.

Break point: but Raducanu saves brilliantly with the forehand, going after Sun’s weaker wing.

Deuce. After another tense rally, the backhand goes long from Raducanu and hands Sun another chance.

Wow. Stunning forehand winner from Raducanu to save, now can she hold?

Raducanu goes after the forehand! Sun nets! Raducanu hangs on again!

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 3-3 Lulu Sun

Sun has reached 25 winners already. Raducanu has three.

On 15-30, Raducanu steps into the net behind a big first-serve and lands the pass.

Backhand winner from Raducanu down the line! Gutsy shot, but well delivered.

Sun responds to drag Raducanu into another deuce game, but Sun then nets on the backhand!

The qualifier is still asking the tricky questions, but Raducanu is just about hanging on for now.

Wimbledon 2024: GAME, SET AND MATCH! Jannik Sinner beats Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (9)

18:04 , Luke Baker

A dramatic end! A typically hard-hitting tiebreak sees both men thundering groundstrokes at each other but Sinner gets the mini-break to move 3-2 ahead and grimly holds on to it until Shelton hits back to make it 5-5.

A stunning forehand winner down the line from Shelton then has him fist-pumping, the crowd on their feet in celebration and a set point at 6-5 on his own serve at his mercy but he flails a forehand wide, going for too much. Sinner survives!

Twice more Shelton brings up set point on the Sinner serve, only to float a groundstroke long and while Sinner sees his first match point go begging thanks to a Shelton ace, he takes the second when Shelton’s second serve takes a net-cord, lands outside the service box for a double fault and No 1 seed Jannik Sinner wins the breaker 11-9 to go through in straight sets!

Wimbledon 2024: *Emma Raducanu 2-6 2-2 Lulu Sun

18:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Sun recovers from those misses to land a stunning forehand winner onto the line.

Deuce. Another clean winner from Sun! This landed onto the line as well!

Break point. Sun paints another line, then has the chance to put it away at the net. LONG! Raducanu survives for now.

Deuce. Sun goes long on the return! Another huge hold from Raducanu as she looks to stay in the match.

Wimbledon 2024: Shelton squanders set point as Sinner takes third set to a tiebreak

17:49 , Luke Baker

Was that Ben Shelton’s chance? At 6-5 up, with set point at 30-40 on the Jannik Sinner serve, the American had a look at a second serve but crunched his forehand return into the net. Sinner then won the next two points as well to escape with a hold and send us to a tiebreak in this third set.

Shelton has to win this to stay in the match

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu 2-6 1-1 Lulu Sun

17:46 , Jamie Braidwood

Sun responds to an error with a crushing forehand strike.

Then, a clipped forehand winner from Sun. She just can’t miss at the moment.

Wimbledon 2024: Who is Lulu Sun?

16:54 , Jamie Braidwood

The 23-year-old was born in New Zealand but her mum is from China and her dad is from Croatia.

She’s the world 123 and started in Wimbledon qualifying, earning three wins in a row to reach the main draw.

In the first round, she beat eighth seed and Australian Open finalist Qinwen Zheng. This is just her second appearance at a grand slam.

“Lulu I played in juniors with. I just know she’s a very tough competitor, like everyone in this.

“You don’t qualify and make fourth round if you’re not extremely dangerous, beating the players she has.

“I’m expecting a really, really tough match. I think, as well, qualifiers are actually sometimes more dangerous. I’m really up for a battle, though.”

Shelton just about clinging on at 4-3 behind but if he can’t get close to the Sinner serve, the Italian will shortly find himself just a set away from the quarter-finals.

Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu vs Lulu Sun

16:46 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu looks to continue her impressive Wimbledon run as she returns to singles action against qualifier Lulu Sun, following her decision to withdraw from her mixed doubles match with Andy Murray.

Raducanu has matched her best performance at Wimbledon and reached the fourth round with an impressive victory over ninth seed Maria Sakkari, but pulled out of the mixed doubles citing wrist soreness.

Raducanu’s decision brought Murray’s Wimbledon career to an abrupt end, with the two-time champion unable to play with another partner, but there are no indications that the Briton’s wrist will stop her from playing in the singles.

The 21-year-old wanted to prioritise the singles and said after her 6-2 6-3 win over Sakkari that she is enjoying herself on the tennis court again following her US Open title three years ago.

Raducanu will be wary of the threat posed by Lulu Sun and knows her opponent well from the juniors. Sun is ranked 123rd in the world but has won six matches in a row from qualifying - including a win against eighth seed Qinwen Zheng.

Brutal. Heart-breaking scenes on Court One as Madison Keys retires. She leaves the court in tears.

Keys was broken when serving for the match and then twinged her groin, leaving the court for treatment.

She could not move after returning to the court and retires within a game, at 5-5 in the third.

It had been an incredible match. Jasmine Paolini advances to her first Wimbledon quarter-final.

A case of deja vu all over again for Madison Keys? She squandered a huge lead in the second set before regaining her composure to win the tiebreak. She appears on the brink of seeing off Jasmine Paolini at 5-2 up, with a double break in the decider, attempting to serve it out. But Paolini digs deep and breaks!

Paolini then holds and it’s now 5-4 - still advantage Keys, who will try to serve it out again but she would’ve loved to finish it there. And now Keys has called for the trainer after appearing to twinge her groin!

SET! Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-4 Ugo Humbert

15:12 , Luke Baker

Like all great champions, Alcaraz upping the ante at the key moment. Wins a great point to get it to 15-30 before Humbert hits back with a stunning put-away volley for 30-30.

Humbert then gets Alcaraz running and he almost pulls off an outrageous cross-court forehand winner but it misses the line by a matter of millimetres. An athletic Alcaraz backhand from behind the baseline after Humbert had scurried to reach a drop shot then moves he game to deuce.

And now a set point for the Spaniard. It’s come out of nowhere in terms of this set, really... Gets a look at a second serve and WHAT A WAY TO WIN THE SET! HOW HAS ALCARAZ DONE THAT?! Humbert has him beaten but it’s incredible defensive tennis, scurrying, sliding and stretching all over the court to keep the ball in play. He even slips at one point but gets to his feet and stays alive! He eventually lunges to reach a drop shot, a tough volley for Humbert but only needs to find the court and he wins the point but it drifts a couple of inches long! WOW WOW WOW! Alcaraz now two sets to the good

Ugo Humbert has been pretty much flawless on serve in this second set and it’s another straightforward hold for the underdog. This time, Alcaraz responds in kind though as he blitzes into a 40-0 lead and then seals the win in quick fashion.

Are we destined for a tiebreak here on Centre?

Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 4-3 Ugo Humbert*

Another good service game from Humbert as he resists any Alcaraz brilliance in a hold to 15.

Still some drama on the Alcaraz service game that follows this time as well though. He kicks at a ball in frustration when a double fault makes it 30-30 before responding with a huge ace down the middle but a gorgeous point by Humbert ends with him cushioning a volleyed winner to bring up deuce.

A clean Humbert forehand winner off the returns saves game point before Alcaraz finally digs out the hold.

Gutsy stuff from Madison Keys over on Court 1. After squandering a 5-1 lead in the second set, she regroups for the tiebreak and fights her way to an 8-6 win in the breaker against Jasmine Paolini! We’re heading for a third and deciding set.

Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 3-2 Ugo Humbert*

14:47 , Luke Baker

Humbert in a spot of bother on his own serve at 30-30 but fires down two aces to immediately put out that fire and keep the set in the balance.

Alcaraz then looks slightly unconvincing on his own serve. Finds the net with an unforced error to make it 15-30 and then volleys long at 30-30 to bring up a break point for the Frenchman! Alcaraz is on the run slightly but Humbert tries to go too deep with a forehand and it bounces long – break point saved by the Spaniard!

Double fault and it’s a second break point. Oof! A 116mph ace out wide saves that for Alcaraz. Now a third break point as the Humbert backhand is too strong but a stretching backhand volley at the net and Alcaraz saves it again. The passing shot wasn’t far from getting past him there! How about break point number four? Humbert goes long on the return and it’s another saved. The defending champion clinging on to his serve here somehow.

Alcaraz squanders a game point as Humbert wins the baseline rally but an ace down the ‘t’ gives him another chance and he finally wins an epic when Humbert’s forehand down the line goes long. A game that lasts more than nine minutes but Alcaraz somehow holds!

GREAT POINT! A lengthy rally ends with Humbert dinking a forehand half-volley almost all the way along the net, getting it to land an inch inside the right tramline and the scrambling Alcaraz can’t get there. Fist pumps to the roaring crowd from the Frenchman!

There’s only one other match in progress due to the rain, and it’s over on Court No 1. Jasmine Paolini has engineered an incredible comeback in this second set against Madison Keys.

Keys was cruising to victory at 5-1 with a double break, seemingly on the verge of sending the match into a decider after Paolini won the first 6-3 but instead, the Italian - who has come out of nowhere this year to surge into the world’s top 10 and reach a grand slam final - has twice broken her American foe when she was serving for the set. It’s now 5-5 and back on serve!

SET! Carlos Alcaraz 6-3 Ugo Humbert

14:19 , Luke Baker

WOW! What a shot that is! The end of a long rally sees Alcaraz send Humbert off court with a backhand and the Frenchman sends a forehand right the way back across. Alcaraz is sprinting and, at full stretch, steers a backhand round the net post and into the postage stamp at the back right of the court. Sensational tennis!

Another thunderous winner moves him to 0-30 and although Humbert fights back, it’s a set point for the Spaniard at 30-40. SAVED! Big first serve down the middle from Humbert that can’t be returned.

But a second set point thanks to a whipped forehand winner down the line and this time, Alcaraz stays in the rally and outlasts his opponent to WIN THE OPENING SET 6-3.

Carlos Alcaraz 5-3 Ugo Humbert*

14:13 , Luke Baker
